If you have a large cavity, a tooth infection, or a badly chipped or cracked tooth, you may need a dental crown.
These are a type of cap that goes over a resized natural tooth and restores its full function and look. However, you might know that getting a crown made for you takes around 2 weeks on average, and in the meantime, you have to deal with a poorly fitted temporary one.
But luckily, you can sometimes get a dental crown in just one day. Check out this short blog post to learn how.
What Is the Procedure Like?
Not all dental crowns can be done in one day. Traditional crowns that are made in a lab will still need 1-2 weeks for a technician to slowly build them to match your impression.
But some practices have same-day crown technology, such as CEREC, which can streamline the process. Patients can get a new, custom crown in just two hours and complete their smile in just one appointment.
Here’s how the CEREC process works:
- Digital scan: First, a special tool will scan your teeth to create a digital image of your tooth and therefore the crown. This scan replaced the uncomfortable putty previously used to take tooth impressions.
- Crown creation: The digital scan is then used by a special CEREC tool to start cutting a block of porcelain and create your custom crown;
- Finishing touches: The dentist then takes the crown and puts it over your tooth for the final adjustments. They may then slightly shave part of it if necessary.
- Cementing: Once the crown feels just right, it’s permanently cemented over your tooth, and the procedure is done.
What Are the Advantages of Same-day Crowns?
Getting CEREC or other types of same-day crowns comes with some unique advantages:
- Faster treatments: You don’t have to wait weeks to get your smile fully restored. CEREC crowns will make sure you leave the office with a happy and healthy smile.
- Better aesthetics: Thanks to the digital scan, the CEREC technology is much more precise when creating the crown. This, coupled with the dentist’s experience, leads to seamless smile restoration.
- Results that last: CEREC crowns can last around 10–15 years, but with the right care, you can extend their lifespan even more. Also, the lifespan of same-day crowns is comparable to that of traditional crowns, so you’re getting the same quality with twice the convenience.
