Conscious Sedation in Watsonville

When you have any type of procedure at Watsonville Dental Wellness Center, we want you to be as comfortable as possible. Upwards of 75% of Americans fear going to the dentist – often as the result of a negative past experience. We want to make sure you feel completely at ease. So, along with traditional local anesthetic, we also offer conscious sedation to our patients.

What is Conscious Sedation?

Conscious sedation, also known as moderate sedation, is the use of medication to help patients relax during their procedure. Unlike general anesthesia, you will actually be awake, but in an extremely calm and relaxed state. This means that you will be able to communicate, although after the procedure is over, you probably won’t remember much – if anything at all!

When Should Conscious Sedation Be Used?

Local anesthetic is used for many procedures, but there are times when the patient would be better off with conscious sedation. Here are some examples:

  • If you have dental phobia or anxiety
  • Local anesthesia is ineffective
  • Long procedures

How Does it Compare to Local Anesthesia?

A local anesthetic is typically applied to affect the area surrounding the focus of the procedure. This allows us to work on that area while you are free from any pain. Sometimes that might not be enough for some patients.

While local anesthesia helps with pain, it won’t do anything to help with anxiety or stress. If you have a dental phobia or highly heightened anxiety at your dentist, conscious sedation will calm you while also keeping you free of pain.

Benefits of Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation offers multiple benefits if you are in need of a dental procedure. Here are some examples:

  • No stress or anxiety
  • Comfort
  • Easier for the dentist
